Artist's Commentary
If you're just joining the story, you can read it from the beginning, by clicking HERE for episode #4.
This comic is dedicated to my friends. Those who stood by me and cheered, and never once gave me any sarcastic comments about how long Newt an John have been stuck on this island since the last episode was uploaded about a month ago. You know who you are... Not so fast, Brian.
AT LONG LAST... Here is the next episode of Newt and John.
I thought I could take a week off, to move and unpack at a new place. Unfortunately, it became easier to take another week off, when I was exhausted from the move. Then a new animation job started... then it doubled. Now, finally, I ignored all other priorities, and finished this episode... even though it means playing catch up for the rest of the week.
This comic reminds me of the classic Warner Bros. "Looney Tunes" cartoons. Whenever the characters were stranded on a deserted island, far away from food, they started picturing their friends as a roasted turkey on a platter, or a glazed ham. I had some fun designing John as various kinds of food. Doesn't John make a tasty-looking ice cream cone! Originally, I just had the glasses on the food, then added the bow-tie since both are signatures of John. As I was putting the panels together, I decided to add the pupils to his eyes, as it added to the expression as John freaks out at Newt's behavior. Of course, I had to switch it after a while, to show John salivating over a Roasted Newt Platter.
If you read this episode and didn't understand the 'General Clawed' reference at the end, well, keep in mind, this is a continuing story, and we did meet the General in episode 5. The one thing I've had to keep track of is the continuity of the time-line. Aside from this big gap since episode 10, I've been telling this story weekly, but when this entire story is together, it will run on a normal hourly timeline. So, John mentions that Newt ate a big breakfast this morning. If you go back and read from the beginning of episode #4, all the events that took place after that would have happened within an hour or so, and then they crashed on the island the same day. When the story is entirely done, it won't take long to read, but the continuity will have to be there.
Since this episode was posted later in the week than I thought it would, I'm going to make the next update on Wednesday of this coming week. That's the plan anyways. I've found with all that's going on with work and life, it's hard to make promises. I do hope you'll come back to check out the next episode!
Cheers,
